Short Biography
René Gaspar Gregory wurde am 6. November 1846 in Philadelphia (USA) geboren. 1873 ging er zum Studium der evangelischen Theologie nach Leipzig. Dort promovierte und habilitierte er sich. 1881 wurde er ordentlicher Honorarprofessor in Leipzig. Im selben Jahr nahm er die sächsische Staatsbürgerschaft an. Unter anderem mit Friedrich Naumann gründete er die liberal-liberale Partei Nationalsozialer Verein.
Im August 1914 meldete sich der Deutsch-Amerikaner französischer Abstammung René Gaspar Gregory im Alter von 67 Jahren als Freiwilliger für den Ersten Weltkrieg. Als Leutnant der Reserve wurde er in der 5. Kompanie des Landsturm-Infanterie-Regiments 106 an der Westfront eingesetzt. Am 9. April 1917 verstarb er im Lazerett in Neufchâtel-sur-Aisne infolge einer Verwundung durch eine Granate, die er als Leiter eines Gräber-Verwaltungs-Kommandos bei der Bergung von Gefallenen erlitt. Auf dem Friedhof in Viller-devant-le-Thour wurde er bestattet. Seit seiner Umbettung ruht er auf der Kriegsgräberstätte Alsfeld.
